In “Self-Portrait,” I decided to “offer myself as a sacrifice.” For about 40 minutes, using only my bare hands, I struggled with the garment. When I was finally able to rip apart this enormous, heavy, and even baroque wedding dress and I put it down on the floor in the shape of a pile of beautiful fabric and lace in various shades of white, it looked much better than when I had worn it. The dress is by presumption an exhibit—it is worn only once, then remains dead, frozen, and robbed of its entire aura. Lifting up the dress required enormous effort. The heavy cloth caused one’s personality to disappear, leaving only the beautifully draped fabric.
